The Whigs

Ivy League Records is delighted to announce its newest signing, Athens, Georgia trio The Whigs.

Heralded by Rolling Stone USA as one of '10 Artists To Watch', The Whigs have been garnering critical acclaim across the US with their mix of definitive teenage anthems and passionate garage rock.

"A fiery, young and timelessly tuneful rock trio … the best unsigned band in America," said Rolling Stone, going on to say, "Nineties indie rock with Sixties pop craftsmanship and Southern-rock twang; Parker Gispert's hoarse vocals and ragged-glory rhythm guitar tap into a Cobain-Westerberg vein."

Now signed to the prestigious ATO Records in the US, home to the likes of My Morning Jacket and Ben Kweller, The Whigs built up a loyal fan base playing countless shows in and around their hometown with the likes of Franz Ferdinand and The Killers, before self-producing and funding their debut album 'Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip'.

University of Georgia students at the time, the band recorded the album on a college budget in an unconventional studio - The Ross Crane House, an abandoned mansion listed on the United States National Register of Historical Places – using recording equipment they bought on eBay and later sold on eBay once they were finished. The result is an album that has been hypnotising listeners with its tightly crafted songs and edgy power.

Along with Spin magazine, Entertainment Weekly, The Washington Post, Stereogum, and many others, Harp magazine raves: "The Athens trio's Southern-fried indie rock conjures Pavement and The Replacements in all the right ways. The Whigs recall the halcyon days of alt-country, when bands brought a punk roar to timeless, meat-and-potatoes songwriting."

Relix magazine goes on to say: "As debuts go, it doesn't get much better: Each song unfurls with hook after hook of sweet melodious college radio pop/rock... It's the same ingenuity in their music that guarantees that The Whigs will be the next Athens band to leave a huge musical footprint."
