15 Days of IVY LEAGUE turning 15! Day 7: Andy K & Catherine
Name: Andy Kelly
Oh, hello. I didn’t see you there.
I started working at Ivy League 1997 when Andy C, Pete and I decided to become record moguls. Honestly, how hard could it be? We hatched the idea for a ‘proper’ label upstairs at Mama Maria’s Italian restaurant on King St Newtown, which was all about garlic bread and Chianti bottles converted into candle holders, you know the scene. Against this high carb backdrop, we decided we would put out our friends’ bands and hope for the best. ‘The best’ certainly did not extend to still being a label fifteen years down the track, that was quite simply unimaginable, as is picking a favourite release over those years – I love them all.
Some highlights? Oh, alright then: hearing “Whatever Makes You Happy” by 78 Saab on the radio for the first time; appearing as “the label guy” in the Mess Hall’s “Keep Walking” video – no acting or costume required; Youth Group’s ‘Shadowland’ and the ‘Skeleton Jar’ album; hearing Josh Pyke play ‘Middle Of The Hill’ for the first time; The City Lights ‘What You Gonna Do’ being recorded on a cassette four track in their rehearsal room; hearing Lanie Lane and freaking out; Steve McDonald and Jon Agnello recording Neon’s album; Hoolahan’s ‘King Autumn’; the Wayne Connolly factor; still being friends with all the bands we started the label with, and each other and all the incredibly decent people we’ve got to work with over the years; the first time we all saw Alpine and it appeared that everyone in the room was on ecstacy – with the exception of us; Snob Scrilla’s 2nd album demos; Rubens-mania; meeting Billy Childish and going to one of his exhibitions in London a few years back; etc.
Favourite Ivy League song not your own: Lanie Lane – What Do I do
Favourite Ivy League album not your own: Cloud Control – Bliss Release
Favourite Ivy League Memory: The last Ivy League show at Good God with Cloud Control was real fun.
